Filemon Santiagowas born in 1958, in San Jose Sosola, in the state of Oaxaca. Self-taught as a painter and print-maker, he studied and worked in Chicago, Illinois for twelve years before returning to Oaxaca.
Santiago has exhibited widely since 1973, in Chicago, San Antonio, New York, Washington DC and Rotterdam, Holland, as well as in Mexico. His works are included in major museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington, DC; the Museum of Modern Art of Monterrey, Mexico; the Museum of Punta del Este, Uruguay; the Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Illinois and the Harold Washington Library, Chicago, Illinois.
