The President of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, announced the death of Mexican master, José Luis Cuevas yesterday, Monday July 3rd 2017.  The president did not however give a cause of death.

José Luis Cuevas died at age 83 in the same city as his birth, Mexico City.  Considered a leader of the Breakaway Generation, Cuevas was one of the first major Mexican artists to steer away from the the Mexican muralist movement, which dominated the art scene of Mexico in the 1930’s and 1940’s.  Cuevas explored the possibilities of using a limited color pallet and focused on the human body in his work, often depicting it as deformed and distorted.

"José Luis Cuevas will always be remembered as a synonym of liberty, creation and universality…” Tweeted out Enrique Pena Nieto.
