Fernando de Szyszlo Dies at Age 92

Peru’s most renowned 21st Century painter, Fernando de Szyszlo, died in his San Isidro home this Monday October 9th, 2017.  The following day, Tuesday, October 10th, his wife Liliana Yábar de Szyszlo died as well. 

Fernando de Szyszlo is known for his fusion of pre-Columbian, indigenous imagery with modern abstraction and surrealism. Born in Lima, Peru, de Szyszlo studied architecture before attending the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru to study art. De Szyszlo then traveled and worked in Europe where he met Octavio Paz, André Breton, and other surrealist poets. His work is now in collections at the world’s most important museums including the MoMA and Guggenheim Museum in New York.
