The current exhibition (11/17 - 02/18) Modern Mexico: Avant-Guard and Revolution examines the advancement of Mexican art during the first half of the 20th Century, and includes 170 works of art by 60 of Mexico’s most renowned artists, including: Diego Rivera, Dr. Atl, Miguel Covarrubias, José Clemente Orozco, Frida Kahlo, and Remedios Varro.  

Attempting to demonstrate a unified style of Mexican art, the collection of work explores the emergence of a national identity, shaped by pre-Colombian folklore, European Modernism, and the revolutionary ideology of the time.  In addition to showcasing iconic paintings by Mexican masters such as Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, the show features other artistic mediums such as literature, film, and music. 

MALBA has also published a catalogue featuring images of every painting presented in the exhibition, essays by the curator, Victoria Giraudo, and an analysis of Mexican Surrealism by psychologist and esteemed art critic, Salomon Grimberg.
