This gouache, watercolor and India ink on “Japanese style” handmade paper by Diego Rivera was executed in 1937 while Diego Rivera stopped at a ranch while on his way to the city of Toluca, Mexico via train. The artwork was originally acquired by the Gimbel brothers (owners of the luxury department store chain in New York and the American Union) in 1944 who had it shipped to New York with a number of other works on paper by Rivera.
The watercolor was sold in 1955 to a private collector in Texas, before being acquired by Bond Latin Gallery.
When the painting came to Bond Latin Gallery in 2016, the colors were extremely fresh but the paper had been folded and taped down, leaving wrinkles and tape marks on the back of the paper. We took the work on paper to internationally renowned art restorer, Marco Grassi who brilliantly restored the piece and left no sign of the prior damage.
Bond Latin Gallery then had the painting framed archivally with museum quality plexiglass.
In 2018 it was showcased at The Mexican Museum in San Francisco for a show titled: Mexico in San Francisco: Works on Paper from Diego River to Alejandro Santiago.
