words from the artist
Within the series Destejidas, I tell the story of María Magdalena from another perspective.
They have made a real mix of several Marías to represent her; always submissive and regretful, treated in some cases as a former prostitute when it was in fact Maria Egipciaca who retired to the desert to atone for her sins.
My Magdalena is a strong, powerful, wise woman - companion of Christ, on par with the apostles.
To the left of the canvas María Magdelena is accompanied by a hairless sheep, the lamb of Christ.
On the right side of the canvas rests a pair of red eggs on the table. The eggs are reminiscent of the story detailing Mary Magdelen challenging emperor Tiberius in regards to the resurrection of Christ.
According to the story a basket of white eggs in Magdelen’s possession turned red, upon a meeting between Mary and the emperor, signifying the truth that Christ had returned to the earth.
This story is how the symbol of Easter eggs came into being in Christianity.
