Today we’re going to be looking at a watercolor by Francisco Toledo.
“Toledo is largely recognized as Mexico’s most important living artists, for myself I’d go a step further and say one of the world’s most important living artists” states Robert Mc Donald.
Toledo comes from a very rural culture in Oaxaca, Mexico, so that relationship between man and animal was very dominant in his childhood.
Toledo continues this theme of the mythological relationship between man and animal in his artwork to this day, which is evident in this piece called the Blue Grasshopper.
It is an absolutely exquisite piece, with great atmosphere in the color, and this strange relationship between the blue grasshopper and what appears to be a reflection of itself in water or some other reflective surface.
It has a wonderfully mystical and mythical quality to it.
The painting is watercolor with pen and ink, dated 1980. It is signed in the lower right hand corner and is in excellent condition.
