José Luis Cuevas died at age 83 in the same city as his birth, Mexico City. Considered a leader of the Breakaway Generation, Cuevas was one of the first major Mexican artists to steer away from the the Mexican muralist movement, which dominated the art scene of Mexico in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Cuevas explored the possibilities of using a limited color pallet and focused on the human body in his work, often depicting it as deformed and distorted.
