The exhibition will feature artworks by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siquieros, Miguel Covarrubias and other Mexican artists that were active in the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s.
Fresco Mural at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI)
The year was 1926 when Californian fresco painter and faculty member of the San Francisco Art Institute, Roy Boynton travelled to Mexico City to study under the world renowned Diego Rivera. Boynton returned to San Francisco with a number of Rivera’s paintings, and urged art patron, Albert Bender to commission Rivera to paint a fresco mural at the San Francisco Art Institute. Bender was nicknamed Albert “Medici” Bender and acted upon Boynton’s suggestion.
Rufino Tamayo: The New York Years
This November, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will be holding a show for Rufino Tamayo entitled, Tamayo: The New York Years. The show will feature 42 works by Rufino Tamayo in an attempt to showcase the effect New York played on Tamayo’s work during the period of time he lived and worked in the city, and to highlight Tamayo’s pivotal role in shaping post-war modern art.
